What CGPA Is Required to Study Abroad?

Quick answer

There is no single CGPA required to study abroad. Universities set their own academic requirements, and these vary by programme, country, level of study and competitiveness.

A 7.0 CGPA may be sufficient for one programme and below the requirement for another. Some institutions publish percentage or GPA equivalents; others assess Indian transcripts directly.

Why there is no universal CGPA cutoff

Overseas universities receive applicants from many grading systems.

Indian institutions themselves use different:

  • CGPA scales
  • percentage conversion formulas
  • grading standards
  • classification systems

For this reason, you should never convert your CGPA using an unofficial internet formula unless the university specifically asks you to do so.

What should you check on the university page?

Look for:

  • minimum bachelor’s classification
  • Indian qualification equivalency
  • subject prerequisites
  • minimum grade in specific modules
  • required years of study
  • accepted three-year or four-year degrees
  • programme-specific requirements

If the page is unclear, ask the university admissions team directly.

Is 6, 7 or 8 CGPA enough?

The answer depends on the target programme.

Instead of searching for “universities accepting 6 CGPA,” build a shortlist based on published eligibility.

A student with:

  • 6.5 CGPA in a highly relevant degree,
  • strong core-subject performance,
  • good projects,
  • relevant experience

may be assessed differently from a student with the same CGPA but weak prerequisite subjects.

Overall CGPA vs core-subject grades

For specialised programmes, specific subjects may matter.

Examples:

Data science may require mathematics, statistics or programming.

Engineering programmes may require relevant engineering coursework.

Finance programmes may expect quantitative preparation.

Research programmes may care about methodology and research experience.

Meeting overall CGPA alone may not establish eligibility.

Can work experience compensate for CGPA?

Relevant work can strengthen an application but cannot be assumed to override a formal academic minimum.

If a programme says a certain academic qualification is required, treat that as a real eligibility condition.

Should you convert CGPA to percentage?

Only according to:

  • your university’s official conversion formula, or
  • the receiving university’s instructions.

Do not create your own conversion simply to make the score appear stronger.

How to improve your chances

  • target programmes matching your academic profile
  • show improvement in later semesters
  • strengthen relevant technical or academic skills
  • secure strong recommendations
  • write a programme-specific SOP
  • include relevant projects and internships
  • apply to a balanced range of institutions

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 CGPA enough to study abroad?

It can be sufficient for many programmes, but it is not a universal benchmark.

Is 8 CGPA considered good?

It may be competitive for many programmes, but highly selective courses can still demand more or assess additional factors.

Can I study abroad below 6 CGPA?

Possibly at selected institutions or through pathway routes, but options become narrower.

Do universities accept percentage instead of CGPA?

Many Indian transcripts use percentage, CGPA or both. Follow the receiving university’s instructions.

Minimum CGPA for masters abroad: avoid universal cut-offs

Search terms such as “minimum CGPA for masters abroad,” “7 CGPA study abroad,” “6 CGPA universities abroad,” “CGPA required for USA,” “CGPA required for UK” and “CGPA required for Germany” suggest that students want a simple number. In practice, the requirement belongs to the university and programme, not to the country as a whole.

Indian students should also avoid unofficial CGPA-to-percentage conversions. Use the conversion method printed by your university or the instructions of the overseas institution. For competitive master’s programmes, core-subject grades, prerequisites and academic trend can matter in addition to the final CGPA.
