Quick answer
There is no single best country for every master’s student.
A useful 2026 shortlist is:
- USA for research breadth and STEM
- UK for one-year master’s programmes
- Germany for low public-university tuition
- Ireland for one-year English-taught technology/business programmes
- Australia for broad choice and current graduate-work benefits for Indian nationals
- Canada for a large public higher-education system
- New Zealand for a smaller system and transparent cost ranges
To turn these options into a shortlist, read How to Choose the Right Country for Studying Abroad.

Best for research: USA
The US system offers unmatched scale, with large numbers of research universities, laboratories and specialist programmes.
Research or teaching assistantships can materially reduce net cost at selected universities.
Best for a one-year master’s: UK and Ireland
Both destinations offer many one-year taught postgraduate programmes.
This helps students who want:
- faster completion
- lower total living-cost exposure
- faster return to employment
Best for low tuition: Germany
Germany is a standout for public-university tuition.
The trade-off is that many master’s programmes run for two years, and German language skills can be important for employment even when the programme is taught in English.
Best for graduate-work duration for Indian master’s students: Australia
Current Australian settings list a three-year Temporary Graduate period for eligible Indian master’s graduates.
This is a visa opportunity, not a guarantee of employment.
Canada: check PGWP before enrolment
Canada remains a major master’s destination, but students should verify Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility before paying fees.
Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates do not currently have the same field-of-study restriction that applies to some other programme types, but language and other PGWP requirements apply.
New Zealand: smaller but structured
New Zealand offers:
- postgraduate fees around NZD20,000–45,000
- up to 25 hours/week student work where eligible
- up to three years post-study for eligible master’s/doctoral qualifications
How to choose
Rank countries on:
- programme fit
- total cost
- duration
- academic eligibility
- research or internship access
- language
- post-study route
- city preference
Then shortlist universities.
